Spreadsheets masterlist

Just gonna make this a sticky post of the spreadsheets that I make. Still working on updating the ones I did previously with season information but the new ones I’ve listed have all that down. Any names down there that don’t have links yet means I’ve not quite made the data presentable yet, but they’re coming…soon-ish.

Notes
-Yes, I am prioritizing working on Aketagawa Jin’s cronies. I really like looking at his hiring patterns
-Through doing this, I learned that Mima Masafumi is really biased too *cough* Kaji *cough* Anzai Chika
-Kimura Eriko’s my favourite sound director to look at in terms of her casting decisions. She picks interesting people!

Edit: And as always, please excuse any errors – these are all sheets I make for my own personal reference & liable to the mistakes of my fat fingers…so if anything is screwed up rest assured I will rectify them at some point 😛

Good Afternoon! Since you follow seiyuus on a daily basic and knows enough about some new seiyuus I would like to ask your opinion about Ohsaka Ryota, the one who start his career late (imo) have you heard him on any anime you like? do you like his voice?

      Hi there! Re: Ohsaka – yes of course, I know him well after all those episodes of Ace of Diamond, Shirayukihime & Knights of Sidonia ^^;

Going into detail about his voice – it is naturally a ‘vanilla’ voice. Plain & neutral, lacking the type of distinctive quality or mannerisms that instantly make you think, “Ah, that’s so-and-so” (ie. ppl like Matsuoka Yoshitsugu or Wakamoto Norio).

That’s not a bad thing per se as it means that Osaka easily lands castings in both lead & supporting roles; he’s got a voice that can fit in anywhere and in fact, is ideal for the ‘normal guy’ that most anime male leads tend to be (see: Brynhildr, Hataraku Mao-sama, Cavalry). Put it this way, Osaka is the type of seiyuu who fits into a role, grows into a character. As opposed to say, Kaji Yuki or Koyasu Takehito who turn all their characters into…Kaji Yuki and Koyasu Takehito, iykwim. Other seiyuu with ‘plain’ voices I can think of off the top of my head – Ono Kensho, Shimazaki Nobunaga, Irino Miyu, Kobayashi Yusuke.

As for my own feelings regarding Ohsaka…I will freely admit that I’m unable to pick his voice out from a crowd, like when he was in Mayoiga or Haikyuu). I certainly don’t mind listening to him (his acting chops are decent), but it’s not the kind of voice I favour – I like stronger voices that have a certain edge to them ie Hosoya Yoshimasa & Sakurai Takahiro are my faves…

I love how you describe this. Having a love for voices and seiyuu, I could never really think of a term for those seiyuu who just have normal neutral voices with not much distinction. I just called them “no distinction” or “non-unique” voices, lol. You are so right, Ohsaka Ryouta definitely lands in this category of “vanilla neutral” voice.

Like you, I also prefer seiyuu with that uniqueness, or as you describe “edge,” to their voices. Among them, some of my favorites with that quality are Sakurai Takahiro and Seki Toshihiko, and lots of others. I can tell it’s them pretty much always, even though they use different intonations depending on the character they’re playing. I really like Hosoya Yoshimasa as well.

Then there are the seiyuu who sound pretty much the same all the time, who turn all their characters into themselves, like Sugita Tomokazu, Koyasu, and Kaji Yuki like you’ve mentioned.

The seiyuu industry, overall, is quite diverse. 🙂

Thanks for the reply! I do think as well, that the industry is big & diverse enough to accommodate all kinds of voices; there will always be a need for versatile seiyuu and for those with striking, easily distinguishable voices. For me, it’s the latter group whose careers tend to go the distance – ppl like Wakamoto Norio, Nakata Jouji, Otsuka Akio ^^

I think so too. I believe it’s those with distinctive voices that have the staying power, in the long run. It’s funny that you mentioned seiyuu that all have a lower voice range.

However, I do think there are plenty of seiyuu in the past who aren’t as active in the industry that also have quite distinctive voices– people like Sasaki Nozumu, Ueda Yuuji, Canna Nobutoshi, and Itou Kentarou. They don’t get many roles anymore, and I wonder why. Are there newer seiyuu who can fit that voice range over say the lower voice range like Wakamoto, Nakata, and Ootsuka? I also think there might just be a little luck and connections with the industry involved too. I can’t really determine exactly why one person makes it to long term while another just fades away gradually.

Hah, those were names that just came to mind immediately. I’d think that there aren’t too many ‘older’ roles that require high-pitched voices – can’t see Miyata Kouki or Takahashi Naozumi getting anything much more in future

to be fair, most seiyuu start losing their ability to maintain their upper pitch and quality of voice by a certain age (Yajima Akiko & most of the female cast of Card Captor Sakura as an example).

As for people like Sasaki, Ueda etc not getting that many roles these days, I was thinking about whether it corresponds to the type of roles they used to get – protagonist/hero/leading man kind of things when compared to the Wakamotos & Nakatas who tend to play baddies, weird characters etc. Was thinking about typical leading men from 15 yrs ago – Hoshi Soichiro, Mizushima Takahiro (or even Minagawa Junko or Saiga Mitsuki who fulfilled that type of role) have all been usurped by younger seiyuu.

As for newer seiyuu who can fit a lower register, ppl like Takeuchi Shunsuke, Takeuchi Ryota, Umehara Yuichiro, Hamano Daiki. But we’ve got the likes of Tsuda Kenjiro, Yasumoto Hiroki and Sugita Tomokazu etc who’ll be occupying that space for the next 20-30 years.

oh, I see. Thank you so much! Since I just one Ohsaka from his mobages roles (yumeiro cast’s Asahina Kyoya and Granblue’s Percival) and I don’t know hot to distinguise a “good voice actor” ( if that is valid) I wanted a opinion based on his traits voie than on his looks. yours was a good explanaton! thanks for your time!

I recently translated this and if you could spread it on twitter or whatever, that’d be great. No need for any credits. I thought of asking you since you were the one to inform me this event existed in the first place.

Nice spreadsheet. So bold font is for main protagonist, italic for characters that appears a lot in the series?

Wow, if you’re Aketagawa Jin’s favorites, you can get many roles. Didn’t expect that Hikasa Youko also got lots of roles from him. She already got many roles from other SD, but adding Jin’s make it a lot.

After you complete all the names there, I wonder if you can add Sawashiro Miyuki, Toyosaki Aki, Hanazawa Kana, and Yuuki Aoi.

    Thx XD

Thank you for your comments! Yes, bold is for main role & italics for major supporting roles.

I do like working on Aketagawa Jin’s favourites cos it’s interesting to track how they can turn from being extras to main stars.

I will take your suggestions into consideration – as a fan of Sphere, Aki is definitely someone I’m looking to do!

Thx for adding Yuuki Aoi 🙂
I like this spreadsheet coz it’s easy to look on seiyuu’s job each year.

About Jin’s favorites, you might want to add Kanemoto Hisako. Her recent roles from Jin : Gundam IBO, Re:Creators, ID-0, Souma food wars (replacing Taneda Risa). Seems there are also many other roles that she got from Jin before.

Btw, your writing about seiyuu earning and casting is a good read. Would be great if it’s put on the front page too.

Hii-chan is certainly on my (very long) to-do list, heh. Just trying to prioritize a few more male seiyuu at the moment!

Re: the post about seiyuu earnings & castings – I don’t actually want to draw too much attention to it as it’s purely an opinion piece & I don’t want people to take it as the absolute truth ^^; There is some stuff in there that also needs a bit of updating, so maybe I’ll highlight it again once it’s ready.

Oh, finally all Sphere members are here. Nice 🙂

I’m looking forward to see Ito Kanae’s spreadsheet. Haven’t seen her much in anime lately. She was really popular back then, with Hanasaku Iroha & Haganai.

For the new seiyuu, seems M.A.O is unstoppable, while Ozawa Ari is getting less jobs.

Btw, have you heard anything about taneda Risa’s illnes? Since shokugeki no souma announced 3rd season, I wish that she can voice Erina again.

no news on Tane-chan’s return yet. the only positive is that they didn’t list the cast member for Erina for S3 yet so there is still a bit of hope. Otherwise, I’m sure Kanemoto Hisako will do a fine job standing in for her…

Re: Ito Kanae. she’s actually working fairly steadily, pretty much averaging the same number of shows every year for the last 10+ years but just not getting many lead roles. Too many young, cute-sounding female seiyuu to compete with, sadly….

There was actually a weird rumor about Taneda Risa, that she got married with Sakurai Takahiro and had twins during the time she was on hiatus. It sounds bizarre and random, but I wonder if there is even a grain of truth in it. lol, the rumor must have come from somewhere. So weird.

lol, yeah that. Sakurai’s been in quite a number of odd romance scandals. The one with Orikasa and Ueda feud seems a little bizarre to me too. I thought his relationship with Ueda Kana was similar to that of Iguchi Yuka– pretty much coworker Komucha buddies. I wonder if he was a player? Now that he’s in his 40s (and possibly married), he must have mellowed out.

That being said, are there any other seiyuu you know has been in multiple romance scandals?

Hi, thx for always keeping your list up to date.

Just a small mistake here, Toyama nao’s role in Yuru camp is Inuyama Aoi on your list, should’ve been Shima Rin (must be because Toyama & Toyosaki are next to each other, haha). Managing all these spreadsheet must be hard, so I really appreciate you.

When did Uchiyama Yumi get added? I didn’t realize lol. Nice, she’s one of my favorites.

Also looking forward on Saito Chiwa.

      but yeah I do already have existing sheets set up for both Hanazawa & Sawashiro, amongst…a few dozen other sheets. I’ll try to work on them when I can but again, no ETA hahaha. So many pending projects ^^;;

Just a curious question. Do you know what happened to Chiaki Omigawa’s career? I know she had a few good early years, and then fell off the map for a long while. She only started getting real roles as of this year, and I think her voice is quite unique.

    Reply
    1. admin Post author

Omigawa only joined a seiyuu agency last year, which is why she’s seeing more anime, game & radio work of late. She was active in other areas before that, just that Hirata Office aren’t really geared towards anime unless the tarento themself is particularly in demand by the industry (Komatsu Mikako etc)…which Omigawa isn’t tbh. BONES/Wakabayashi is about the only studio/sound director combination that consistently hires her.

How often does it take to add another spreadsheet to the growing list, and who do you typically record data about? There are some additions you can make, Lynn is Mafuyu in BokuBen and Hatanaka is Eiji in Senryu Shoujo.

And also, How do you feel about Ari Ozawa? She’s been getting sidelined from major roles for the past two years, but it seems like she’s slowly getting back to her former ground this year. Was this because of I’M (her agency) or something else?

thanks for those 2 roles that I neglected to update!

I generally do sheets for anyone who has a steady stream of acting roles that aren’t tied into game/idol franchises. for younger seiyuu I tend to pick up whoever looks like they might have a long-running career focused on anime voice acting, particularly those from the bigger agencies. The rookie pages don’t take me long to do, Ichinose Kana’s for example, was done & uploaded in 10 minutes flat.

my list of sheets is sprawling and incomplete though, especially for ppl with long careers like Sugita, Koyasu, Kawasumi, Kuwashima etc. who I still haven’t gotten anywhere near to finishing…

As for Ozawa, it has been a little disappointing that she’s been usurped by her junior Hondo Kaede in recent times but I’m still confident she’ll be around lfor a while. Ppl like Seto Asami have also experienced career blips before, so fingers crossed…

    Hi, small suggestions here.
-Lynn had a role in Wataten (winter 2019) as Matsumoto Kouko
-Kobayashi Yuu had a role in Mob 100 S2 ep 2 as ohiki-san (the dragger)
-Hanamori Yumiri didn’t voice Minowa Gin in YuYuYu S1 (2014), that character didn’t make an appearance in season 1, she appeared on game & season 2.

Hi, I have returned after a long while. I pay lots of attention to anime cast lists and notice that newer seiyuu are more of a rarity in more esteemed series, and I feel that it is probably a lot harder for them to find opportunities in the field. Most of them are cast in below average or bad series. So, I am curious on your thoughts on who are the most promising rookie seiyuu so far. (both male and female).

    Reply
    1. admin Post author

      hi, welcome back!

Seiyuu castings are influenced by a lot of different factors; budget being one of them – ‘bigger’ series like Jump titles, NHK show or prime-time slots tends to feature more prominent names. Some staff also like to consider the dynamics of the cast as a whole, so realistically they won’t want to cast a lone rookie in a cast full of veterans.

As for promising rookies, my favourites from the group of seiyuu who debuted within the last 1-2 years:

Male – Suzuki Ryota, Otsuka Takeo, Kobayashi Chiaki
Female – Fairouz Ai, Shimabukuro Miyuri, Ichinose Kana

It’s kind of hard to pick out the guys who’ll make it big as most of them don’t hit their peak til they hit ~30 – someone like Enoki Junya for example, is only really starting to hit his stride.
